FLAME TREE COTTAGES, NUNGWI
 
Flame Tree Cottages is a small 16 room beach hotel in a private garden on the North West coast of the island.  It is situated at the quiet end of the North West Nungwi tourist area, which boasts some of the nicest beaches in Zanzibar. It faces west for perfect sighting of the setting sun. To watch the sunset with the traditional sailing fishing dhows sailing out to the fishing ground or coming back with their catch in the foreground is magical.
 
Flame Tree Cottages is within a close walk to numerous restaurants and bars. The hotel is comprised of individually styled cottages with spacious rooms with large verandas.  Breakfast is usually served on your own cottage veranda.
 
Some cottages have a sitting room and a few have a small kitchen for those who may wish for occasional self-catering. The management is prepared to assist on purchases. There is a daily surcharge for self-catering allowing flexibility for this option.
 
The Hotel has an aura of tranquility and a feeling of spaciousness in its large garden. The service is friendly and personal but without being intrusive.
 
The Hotel and gardens are private to ensure our guests have maximum seclusion and privacy whilst sunbathing or lounging on a hammock. Short steps at the front lead to the beach and to the turquoise and blue sea of the Indian Ocean.
 
The tropical garden has a mixture of Coconut palms, Casuarinas trees, Frangipani trees Banana trees and flower-beds full of colourful plants set amidst the lawns. The Garden view rooms enjoy a country atmosphere with bird song.
 
An in-house ‘mashua’ (traditional wooden boat) takes people for fishing, snorkeling and sunset sails. For trips to Mnemba Island a picnic lunch is provided.
 
Hammocks and loungers are distributed in the sun bathing area facing the beach as well as in the garden.
 
Accommodation at Flame Tree Cottages
 
There are 16 rooms. One Honeymoon/family suite, one - two bedroom unit with central sitting room; one 2 bedroom with interconnecting door family suite; four - one bedroom units with sitting room and seven double/twin rooms.  All rooms are built to a high standard; all have en-suite bathrooms with hot and cold water, air conditioning, ceiling fans, mosquito nets and refrigerators. All the rooms can sleep three when an extra bed is supplied. Wifi access is available in the rooms and an internet connection is available in the restaurant.
 
Our family suite Rosemary and Thyme is on top of the restaurant but faces the ocean rather than the garden. The entrance is from the veranda facing the ocean and the suite consists of two spacious en-suite rooms. Rosemary has a kingsize bed whilst Thyme (reached through an interconnecting door) has twin beds.
 
Quality and comfortable furnishing is a feature of every room. Some rooms have king size beds some have twins. All beds have sprung mattresses. Some rooms are sea facing some garden facing. All are priced the same and allocated on first come basis.
 
The exception to the pricing structure is our Honeymoon or family suite called Desert Rose. This is a large room with an open plan sitting room (there is a door for privacy) and two verandas one facing the sea and the other smaller veranda facing the garden. It is furnished with a four poster bed and antique furniture. In the sitting room there are couches of traditional bench design which convert into two comfortable single beds when the suite is used as a family accommodation sleeping four.
 
Dining at Flame tree Cottages
 
Dining at Flame Tree Cottages is mainly for residents. Our chef prepares meals to order and dinner is served at candle lit tables set close to the sea. The menu is a mixture of international and local cuisine, of Lobster, Prawns Crab and varieties of fish dishes. In addition the menu offers chicken, meats and vegetarian dishes. Nungwi being a fishing village; the fish served is locally obtained.
 
Snacks are available throughout the day and can be taken either on the cottage veranda, by the sunbathing area or in the restaurant.
 
Location
 
Flame Tree Cottages is situated on the North Western side of the Nungwi Peninsula on the North Coast of Zanzibar. It is an hour’s drive from the Airport and the main Zanzibar Town commonly referred as “Stone Town”. It is close to the boat building and fishing village of Nungwi where visitors can watch boat building that has not changed for centuries; using traditional tools and methods.
 
Activities
 
Activities centre on the sea. Sailing, Diving, Snorkeling and Fishing (both deep sea and inshore reef). There is a Turtle sanctuary nearby which is worth a visit. An in-house boat, capacity 20 persons, caters for most activities.
 
Nungwi has five Diving Centers offering diving experience for the qualified and novices.  Three are within walking distance of between 5 to 15 minutes of Flame Tree Cottages. There are two Centres nearby offering deep sea fishing.
